Despite the garish colours and outlandish items that Rick has built his empire and namesake upon, it can be surprising to see how dull and utilitarian his own outfit choices are during shows.
Undoubtedly a physical expression of the chaotic and tiring process of putting on a show, the necessity of performance far outweighs the grandstanding opportunity to reveal how the designer wears his own stuff.
Looking into the daily outfits of Rick –observed through the diamond encrusted lens of Tyrone Dylan– Rick has a fairly mundane wardrobe. This is further observed in Vogue’s version of MTV Cribs (released last year) in Concordia Italy where Rick nonchalantly shows off a bleak pile of black clothes encased in a marble armoire.
We recreated every image of a crooked smiling Rick quickly thanking the crowd for attending his men’s shows over the last ~20 years. His uniform changes at a leisurely pace, often consistent with the same outfit worn at the previous handful of shows. Rick describes this mentality of dressing akin to a priest or a prisoner. The rationale for this being that “not thinking about [his] clothes let’s [him] focus on clothes for other people”.
Recent seasons depict Rick involving a bit more pageantry into his appearance, but none will be surprised to see him offer a half bow at the next show wearing his iconic, reductive, and effortless uniform. Shows disrupted by COVID-19 are still represented here with a still snagged from the video release when possible.
