An overwhelming onslaught of hyped up blogs, stories, and unboxing videos featuring Geobaskets fills every crevice of the “avant garde” fashion web– and for good reason. Geobaskets have been a tangible and synonymous representation of the Rick Owens brand for 13 years, with Dunks adding another 5 years to that already astounding figure.

Throughout these years, the model leisurely evolved alongside the brand–with many years having a distinct quality that reflects the inspiration and direction of that season.

Following the much controversial Nike cease and desist letter for the Dunk, the Geobasket was an instant obsession for many enthusiasts and an elevated gateway sneaker that provides a blistered leather path towards the morphine drip sure to follow.

What once dominated the shelves in years previous has now subsided into a slowed pulse, pulled off the stone runway of Palais de Tokyo but defiantly showcased on every season’s purchaser linesheet. A guarantee against the unpredictable. A familiar face.

What started out with a more simple and crude edge to them has been tinkered and toyed with over the years, adding flourishes of newness to an already exaggerated facade on their tank-like structures.

Conversation continues in comment pages and discord groups about reworking older models to be represented again; whether or not to defibrillate the coveted corpses that fill the Grailed graveyard for a shocking price tag towards a yellowed and crumpled heaping pile of a shoe. Should the Dunks return or should they be only available to those with a spare $4,000? Should the rare models remain scarce or would we like to see a reimagined version of these old school favorites?

Recent seasons have seen the most changes come to this oldest child of the brand, sparking new life and inspiration into this exhausted staple. Jacked up soles, campy and cartoonish paint jobs, and innovative leathers have transformed even the most jaded and elitist fans of the brand into considering adding a new iteration back into the wardrobe.
